Several Marketing Derby Bondholders figure highly in new research carried out by the University of Derby listing Derby and Derbyshire’s Top 200 businesses.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK), which has its UK car manufacturing plant at Burnaston, once again tops the annual list, which is calculated by turnover.

It is joined in the top five by construction giant Bowmer + Kirkland, which is placed third, train-maker Bombardier (now Alstom), which is fourth and engineering giant Rolls-Royce, which is fifth.

A number of other Bondholders, including the university itself, are also featured on the list, which has been compiled by researchers at its Business School.

They include heating technology manufacturer Vaillant, which sits just outside the top 10 in 11th.

It is joined in the top 100 by fellow Bondholders Ward, A1 Comms, whose business arm is called Yappl, Mortgage Advice Bureau, Totally, Clowes Developments and Denby Pottery.

Also on the list are Wellglade, the company behind bus operator trentbarton, NK Motor Group, Ron Brooks, Wheeldon Brothers and  Midland Lead.

The Top 200 ranks all active, private sector businesses in Derby and Derbyshire by turnover, which the university says is a simple but powerful indicator of business growth and relative positioning.

It has been compiled from publicly available information for the financial period 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021, including data from Companies House and the Fame database.

According to researchers, during this financial year, which was significantly impacted by the pandemic, most businesses saw a drop in turnover.

The total turnover for all 200 businesses was £3.78 billion less than last year — a drop of around 14%.

However, the research found that several sectors remained resilient — especially healthcare and medicine, construction, and chemicals.

Speaking at a recent launch event for the new report, Professor Kathryn Mitchell, the university’s vice-chancellor, said: “Although covering a period when businesses were impacted by the pandemic, this report confirms that our city and country remain home to some of the world’s most successful businesses.

“The jobs they provide for thousands of people, including our graduates, are vital to supporting our communities and the prosperity of our region.

“The university will continue to work closely with employers and businesses across a range of sectors to help meet the current and future needs of our region so that we can maintain this position of collective strength.”

The Top 200 list will feed into the East Midlands Top 500 companies league table, which is due to be published in July.
