A world record-breaking endurance cyclist, who is backed by a number of Marketing Derby Bondholders, has published a new book all about his exploits.

Called The Race of Truth, the book details Leigh Timmis’ record-breaking cycle across Europe.

Back in 2018, the Derby rider became the fastest person to cycle across the continent, completing the challenge in just 16 days, 10 hours and 45 minutes – breaking the previous world record by an astonishing eight days and 17 hours.

But the book is not just about the physical challenge – it is also about the mental obstacles Leigh needed to overcome before he set out to achieve the record.

Leigh, whose record attempts have been backed by Bondholders including HUUB, the University of Derby and EVAD, said: “It’s a book about self; how we deal with the challenges life throws at us and, ultimately, how we define ourselves.

“It takes the reader through the year of transformation it took to reach the start line and its accompanying highs and lows; identifying a new goal, building a world-class team, developing a positive mindset, and creating an innovative strategy for ultra-endurance cycling.

“Then, in an adrenaline-fuelled race across a continent, everything is stripped away to reveal the true reason behind taking on this challenge.”

Leigh said he decided to write the book because he wanted to share the “tools” he used to help him on his mental health journey, which ultimately led him to success.

He said: “The world record project changed me for the better; guidance from a team of experts helped me to achieve something I could never have done when I set out.

“The Race of Truth captures every experience and lessons I learned along the way, including my own mental health journey, and shares the tools I used to achieve my best.

“Those tools are not specific to sport, they’re applicable to any aspect of life and I wrote this book in the hope that what I learned will also help readers of the book to achieve their best.

“If my book helps one person to open up about their mental health, achieve their goal, or vicariously escape into an adventure across a continent, it’s done its job.”

Within the book, Leigh also pays tribute to all those who have supported him over the years, including the Bondholder community.

He said: “I believe Marketing Derby Bondholders will particularly enjoy immersing themselves in the story because it unfolds within the familiar setting of our city’s landscapes, architecture and businesses.”
