Arena helps budding cycling star get back on track
Derby Arena is playing a key role in helping a University of Derby student make a return to cycling following a life-threatening accident.
After suffering a devastating BMX crash in September 2024 that left him in a coma and requiring intensive care, 19-year-old Lewis Fletcher has made a remarkable return to cycling by taking to the arena’s velodrome track.
He has swapped BMX racing for track cycling and is training on the Derby City Council-owned velodrome as he sets his sights on reaching the highest levels of the sport.
Lewis’s return to the bike marks a significant milestone in his recovery, having overcome serious brain injuries, cognitive fatigue and challenges with speech.
His recent performances, including a silver medal in the team sprint at the BUCS Championships and competing at the Track National Championships, highlight both his resilience and his potential within track cycling.

Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha, the city council’s cabinet member for Streetpride, public safety and leisure, said: “Lewis’s journey is truly inspiring and demonstrates the incredible power of determination, resilience and the role that sport can play in recovery.
“We are proud that Derby Arena has been able to support Lewis as he returns to cycling and pursues his ambitions.
“Our facilities are here for everyone in the community, from those taking their first steps into cycling to athletes striving for elite performance, and we look forward to seeing Lewis continue to progress.”
Operated by Derby City Council, Derby Arena is one of the region’s leading indoor cycling facilities, offering a closed-road circuit and velodrome that supports both grassroots participation and high-performance training.
Lewis, who is aiming to progress through the British Cycling pathway and ultimately reach Team GB level, said: “Derby Arena is the perfect facility to train as was part of the reason why I chose to study at the University of Derby.
“The race events at the arena have been great to be part of and I look forward to many more hours of training and racing at Derby.”
