The new facility, scheduled to be completed by late 2021, will be part of Moorways Sports Village and will include a 50 metre swimming pool, water park and learner pool, alongside a gym, fitness studios, sauna and steam rooms.

Steve Chambers, Regional Director at Bowmer and Kirkland, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this contract to build Moorways Sports Village.

“After forging an excellent relationship with the council during our construction of Derby Arena, we are looking forward to working with them for the construction of this exciting new addition to the leisure facilities in the city.”

Bowmer and Kirkland has experience of delivering major projects for the city council, including Derby Arena, a multi-purpose events venue next to Derby County’s Pride Park Stadium, which has its own velodrome.

Councillor Robin Wood, the city council’s cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “The main construction contract has been signed.

“A lot of work is set to take place on the site and we can look forward to Derby’s new pool and water park being built over the next two years.”

The next stage in the development of Moorways Sports Village is marked by the Moorways Athletics Stadium achieving official recognition for being among the best-managed facilities in the country.

The TrackMark accreditation, awarded by UK Athletics, means it meets the high standard required to host competitions at a national level, as well as local and regional events.

Moorways Stadium will be hosting a 2020 Schools’ International event on 18 July, as well as local and regional athletics competitions throughout the summer.
