Trust urges volunteers to sign up for life-changing Kenya trip

Derby County Community Trust is urging volunteers to sign up to its annual trip to Kenya, where they will help communities in need.

Next year, the charitable arm of Derby County will once again be sending a large team of volunteers to the African country.

Since its inception in 2012, hundreds of passionate volunteers have joined the yearly trip.

Facilitated by African Adventures, it supports partner schools in the impoverished communities of Nakaru.

Closer to home, the trip also contributes to the delivery of the trust’s programmes back in Derby.

There’s a crucial role for every volunteer to play on the trip.

Much of the work focuses on renovating classrooms, improving sanitation and creating safer school environments. This includes tiling, painting, sanding and building.

Many volunteers also work alongside local teachers to deliver lessons, share knowledge and teach children new skills.

Engaging children in physical activity is another key element of the support provided, with volunteers organising football tournaments, providing sports equipment and playing playground games with students each day.

But according to the trust, the trip is not just about the hard work; it’s also about experiencing the beauty and culture of Kenya.

In a statement it said: “During your trip, you’ll have the chance to enjoy unforgettable excursions, including exploring Lake Nakuru National Park, witnessing the Menengai Crater and visiting Thompson Falls.

“You’ll also have the opportunity to experience Kenyan culture, including a visit to the Walk Centre to participate in a traditional Sunday Church Service.”

A no-obligation open evening where people can get more information will be held on Wednesday 16 September, from 7pm to 8.30pm at Pride Park Stadium.
