Derby has retained an accreditation for the way it manages its evening and night-time economies for the 13th consecutive year.

Managed by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), the Purple Flag is awarded by an independent panel to areas meeting strict standards between 5pm and 5am.

The panel highlighted Derby’s combination of dining, culture, and entertainment, alongside its measures to ensure public safety.

A partnership of local organisations works together through Derby’s Purple Flag group to improve the city centre at night.

It includes the Derby City Council, Derbyshire Constabulary, local business groups, the Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), Derby Homes, the University of Derby and Visit Derby.

The judges highlighted several key successes in Derby’s application this year.

They included popular night markets in Sadler Gate and the launch of the Vaillant Live venue.

They welcomed the reintroduction of the city centre manager role and the introduction of a local area coordinator.

They also recognised the strong focus on youth inclusion through the Derbion Student Takeover and “safer spaces” initiatives with the University of Derby.

Councillor Sarah Chambers, the city council’s cabinet member for communities, equalities and public safety, said: “Derby’s 13th consecutive Purple Flag award reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting a safe and thriving nightlife.

“By partnering closely with the police and local businesses, we are directly tackling safety concerns so residents and visitors can feel secure.

“This award shows we are on the right track, and we will keep working with our partners to make our city a welcoming place for everyone.”

Brad Worley, BID manager for Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter, said: “We are delighted that Derby has once again achieved Purple Flag accreditation, recognising the collective efforts of our night-time economy businesses and the strong partnership working that helps ensure the city continues to meet the high standards required by the scheme.

“We have proudly supported Purple Flag since Derby first achieved accreditation over 13 years ago, championing the city’s safe, welcoming, and vibrant evening and night-time offer.

“We look forward to continuing to showcase everything Derby has to offer and building on this success in the years ahead.”
