In the latest edition of Marketing Derby’s Innovate Magazine we meet the people behind Work Wallet whose innovative technology is revolutionising workplace safety.

Work Wallet was founded in Derby in 2017 by Jonny Gray and Adam Civval.

Its innovation is a powerful, cloud-based, mobile-first software platform which is designed to reduce complexity and to work where a company’s employees need it – on-site, in the office or on-the-move.

Jonny told Innovate: “It used to be that health and safety was seen as the job of a specific officer or team, but now it’s very much becoming an embedded part of every business.

“It’s a legal requirement, and its importance is increasingly being understood at all levels of organisations.

“What we are doing is providing a digital solution which makes it easy for people to play their part in supporting that safety culture.”

“We realised that people were really struggling to communicate with their staff around health and safety.

“As we looked more into it, we found that so much of the process was paper-based, laborious and bureaucratic and we thought things really needed to change.

“We realised that what would be key was simplicity, ease of use and the ability to get information out to people – and for them to send information back.

“So, we took a punt, and we created an app.”

Work Wallet allows users to deal with issues such as incident reporting, audits, digital inductions and permits to work from the screen of their mobile phone.

The launch version’s initial four modules have, over eight years of development, been boosted to 14, which clients can choose from depending on their needs.

These include the functionality to manage asset inspections, risk assessments, contract management, PPE, safety cards, clocking in and lone workers.

Jonny told Innovate: “Put simply, it’s a software as a service platform which allows you to communicate to your workers and allows them to communicate back to a portal, which managers use to ensure that people are safe and compliant.

“It’s really easy to use and onboarding is simple, and these two factors have really helped to drive our success.

“Most people who develop tech platforms do things from a tech perspective and then tell people, ‘This is how you have to use it’.

“We wanted to see things the other way around and think about how people would want to use it.”

Work Wallet is now embraced across multiple sectors and has a client list featuring big names such as rail freight giants Freightliner, global commercial real estate business CBRE, international supply chain management firm Incora, and Encore, which organises major events across the world.

But Jonny and Adam are particularly grateful to East Midlands Chamber and construction giants Bowmer + Kirkland who recognised the potential of Work Wallet in its early days.

Jonny told Innovate: “They had the foresight and the vision to put it into their businesses, and it really grew from there,”
