A car built in Derbyshire by Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK has triumphed at awards recognising the best fully-electric and hybrid cars.

The Corolla, which is built at Toyota’s Burnaston plant, was named Best Hybrid Medium Estate Car at the recent 2023 Electrified Top 50 Awards.

The estate form of the Corolla is known as the Corolla Touring Sports.

Toyota said its awards success was down to “the real-world effectiveness of Toyota’s multi-path technology approach to achieving sustained reductions in CO2 emissions”.

This strategy has seen the car manufacturer build cars powered by hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric, battery electric and fuel cell electric powertrains.

Iain Robertson Diesel and Eco Car editor, who announced the award, said: “If you need a hybrid estate, look no further than the UK-built Corolla, which is not only cheap to run and good to own, but also as reliable as a lump hammer.

“A facelift for 2023 added some welcome extra power, so even the 1.8-litre version should feel nippy, and comfortably top 60 mpg.”
