Call for more support for university start-ups

The University of Derby has welcomed new research which claims that 27,000 new start-ups could be established at institutions by 2028.
According to analysis by advocacy organisation Universities UK, which represents universities across the UK, these start-ups would have a predicted combined turnover of around £10.8 billion.
But it warns that in order to continue seeing such growth, universities must be sustainably funded – and has called for more support from the Government.

Among the University of Derby’s start-up success stories is Goldbox Productions, a video and photography agency established by four enterprising film production graduates while they were still studying.
The company, which is now based at the university’s Enterprise Centre, has a strategic partnership with the university and a list of significant clients.
Joshua Spaticchia, chief executive of Goldbox Productions, said: “Working with the university has enhanced our operational capabilities and delivered wider potential for strategic growth, as we take on larger commercial contracts and make connections with a much broader network.”

Professor Warren Manning, provost – innovation and research at the University of Derby, said: “University supported start-ups such as Goldbox Productions are crucial to the UK economy.
“They drive innovation, create jobs and challenge existing industries with fresh ideas, new technologies and foster competition.”
