Architectural students at the University of Derby have taken part in a design competition, putting their visions forward to reshape the urban landscape as part of its City Masterplan initiative.

Six teams of first and second-year architectural students recently participated in a design competition to present their ideas to revitalise an unused area located at Bridge Street and Little Bridge Street, aligning with the university’s larger vision for urban renewal.

In 2022, the University of Derby unveiled its ambitious expansion plans in collaboration with Matthew Montague Architects, aiming to revamp prominent areas around One Friar Gate Square, Ford Street, Bridge Street, Agard Street, and Nuns Street.

The core of this Masterplan envisions the development of an Academic Zone and an Enterprise Zone to boost the university’s presence and connectivity across its campuses.

Through an architectural competition, students were tasked with conceptualising and designing a public space within the Masterplan.

Presenting their forward-thinking designs to key stakeholders, including representatives from the university’s estates department and Matthew Montague Architects, the students showcased their creative talents and understanding of sustainable design principles.

Daniel Evans, architect at Matthew Montague Architects, said: “Working alongside these budding architects and technologists has been truly inspiring.”

Dan Illsley, from the university’s estates department, praised the students for their hard work, highlighting their “use of landscape, creativity, functionality, sustainability, and accessibility”.

The students’ designs proposed a range of potential features for the public realm, including an amphitheatre, event spaces, space for food vendors, and interactive elements, such as a maze, all designed with considerations for biodiversity, inclusivity, safety, and community engagement.

Collaborating with Matthew Montague Architects, the University of Derby is hoping to bring elements of these innovative designs to fruition.

A planning application will be submitted to Derby City Council in the coming weeks.
