YMCA Derbyshire is calling on fellow Marketing Derby Bondholders to help it achieve national recognition for its various projects, which support young people and the wider community.

It has been named as a semi-finalist in the YMCA England and Wales Youth Matters Awards – and is shortlisted in three categories: YMCA of the Year, Health and Wellbeing Project of the Year and Covid Community Impact.

It has been nominated alongside other YMCA’s across England and Wales.

However, to get to the final, it needs votes from the Derbyshire community for each award.

YMCA of the Year recognises a YMCA that in the last year has had a tangible and positive impact on younger people and the wider community.

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, YMCA Derbyshire regularly adapted its services to meet the ever-increasing and changing needs of young people and the community.

The team provided virtual one-to-one sessions, quizzes, food parcels and hot meals to combat loneliness and isolation.

The Health and Wellbeing Project of the Year recognises YMCAs that have delivered innovating and inspiring projects, which have had a positive impact.

The ‘This is Derby’ project, which YMCA Derbyshire ran in collaboration with Derby County Community Trust and Baby People, has helped support over 2,000 young people.

By engaging with positive activities including DJ sessions, one-to-one chats and online sports, young people have a safe space to express themselves and feel included.

The Covid Community Impact award recognises a YMCA that has delivered a project of initiative outside of the scope of their normal offer, serving the community’s needs during the pandemic.

During the first and second lockdowns, YMCA Derbyshire’s community connector was cooking and delivering 200 meals to isolated and lonely people in the community, many of whom had not had a cooked meal for weeks.

A thousand food parcels were also given to members of the community and young people living at the YMCA campus who were finding it difficult mentally to go to the shop for food.
