Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council, along with the Lord-Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Derbyshire, have launched a new awards scheme aimed at recognising the heroes of the pandemic.

The Derbyshire Beacon of Hope Awards aim to salute people in Derbyshire who have gone above and beyond over the past 12 months since the coronavirus crisis began.

It aims to recognise and thank those who helped through volunteering, delivering key responses, or supporting those in need, particularly vulnerable adults, children and young people.

Councillor Chris Poulter, leader of Derby City Council, said: “On an almost daily basis, we see and hear of the adaptability, flexibility and the determined efforts of so many people, to support all those in need throughout our communities.

“Alongside the Lord-Lieutenant and the High Sheriff, we are looking to highlight the incredible efforts of just some of those people, who are selflessly prepared to go the extra mile without ever seeking recognition.”

Councillor Barry Lewis, leader of Derbyshire County Council, said: “Over the past year, Derbyshire residents have worked tirelessly and selflessly to keep communities safe, support the most vulnerable, keep businesses going and pull us all through the most challenging time most of us have ever faced.

“Individuals and groups across the city and county have put others first, showing kindness, compassion, enterprise and a strong community spirit, which has been heart-warming to see.

“As we continue to live through the pandemic, I’m delighted that Derbyshire County Council is joining forces with Derby City Council, the High Sheriff and the Lord-Lieutenant to recognise the amazing response and relief efforts shown by so many, by launching the Derbyshire Beacon of Hope awards.

“We want to hear your views, appreciation and stories about individuals and/ or organisations, who you feel should be nominated to receive this award, highlighting their key efforts since the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak.”

Nominations can be made up until Friday, 14 May. For more information, or to nominate an individual/organisation please click here.
