Innovative net-zero hub aims to help young people flourish

YMCA Derbyshire has lifted the lid on a new innovative net-zero learning space designed to help young people develop skills, confidence and connections with nature.

The purpose-built Green Youth Hub, located within Wilmorton Community Gardens, has been designed to provide young people with practical learning opportunities, environmental education and wellbeing activities in a unique setting that combines indoor and outdoor learning.

The hub, which has been made possible through funding from the Youth Investment Fund, was recently unveiled to invited guests at a launch event.

Among the attendees was Derby North MP Catherine Atkinson MP and Councillor Nadine Peatfield, leader of Derby City Council, alongside partners, funders, educators and community supporters who have helped bring the project to life, including Vaillant.

The project was developed in response to feedback from more than 500 young people across Derby, who said they wanted more safe spaces where they could learn new skills, build confidence and connect with others.

The Green Youth Hub will support young people through a wide range of activities including horticulture, construction, forest school sessions, wellbeing programmes and creative learning opportunities.

During the day, it will also be home to YMCA Derbyshire’s Key College provision, supporting young people aged 14 to 25 who benefit from a more personalised approach to education.

The hub has been designed as a living example of sustainability. Features include solar panels, an air source heat pump, permeable landscaping and a specially designed rain garden that supports biodiversity and sustainable water management.

The building has been constructed to net-zero carbon standards, helping demonstrate how modern sustainable technologies can play a role in tackling climate change.

Louise Curd, director of lifelong learning at YMCA Derbyshire, said: “The Green Youth Hub is far more than a building.

“It is a place where young people can discover their talents, gain practical skills, improve their wellbeing and develop confidence for the future.

“We know that many young people learn best through hands-on experiences.

“This space will provide opportunities to learn by doing, whether that’s growing food, developing construction skills, taking part in outdoor activities or learning about sustainability.

“Most importantly, this project has been shaped by young people and their aspirations.

“We are investing in their future while creating a greener, more sustainable future for Derby.”
