An academic at the University of Derby has scooped a prestigious national award for his commitment to mentoring the next generation of marine scientists.

Professor Michael Sweet, who heads up the university’s Aquatic Research Facility, scooped the title of ‘Outstanding Research Supervisor of the Year’ at the ‘Oscars of higher education’ – the Times Higher Education Awards.

Since joining the university in 2013, Professor Sweet has not only successfully supervised nine PhD and three MPhil students, with a further 15 doctoral researchers currently under his guidance, he has also led pioneering techniques into coral spawning – paving the way for coral reef restoration around the world.

Many of his former students now lead major initiatives in conservation, consultancy, research and aquaria worldwide.

Professor Sweet, a professor in Molecular Ecology, said: “It truly is one the job’s greatest privileges to supervise students and see them blossom and go onto successful and rewarding careers and I am therefore honoured not only to have been shortlisted, but to have won this national award.

“All those shortlisted showcase the best of how our country, and the universities within, focus on the next generation. I therefore accept the award in recognition of those I’ve been lucky enough to guide and mentor past and present.

“It’s a wonderful recognition, but the credit is shared – working alongside such enthusiastic, curious and determined individuals makes every part of this role meaningful.”
