Major padel courts facility officially opens at Derbion

One of the UK’s largest indoor padel courts has opened for business inside the Derbion shopping centre.
Community sports operator, Social Sports Society, has officially opened the facility, which includes brand-new 10 indoor padel courts.
It has been created on part of the former Eagle Market space, with the remaining area set to be taken over by Flo Skatepark in the coming weeks.

The new 54,773 sq ft padel venue offers people of all ages and ability the chance to play the game year-round, and experience one of the world’s fastest-growing sports.
Beth McDonald, managing director at Derbion, said: “Padel is growing rapidly across the UK, and we’re incredibly proud to play a part in bringing it to Derbion for locals.
“The arrival of Social Sports Society offers a brand-new, modern and inclusive space where people can meet, stay active and be part of a growing community sport.
“Alongside the upcoming arrival of Flo Skatepark in the coming weeks, these two new additions mark an exciting milestone for Derbion.
“Together, they offer something brand-new for visitors and significantly expand our leisure offering, ensuring that Derbion remains the go-to destination for a great day out across the region.”

Padel, which is considered one of the UK’s most rapidly expanding sports, is known for its simple rules, fast-paced play and inclusive appeal.
The sport is played in doubles on an enclosed court about a third the size of a tennis court.
Founded in London to unite communities through sport, the Derbion opening is Social Sports Society’s first venue outside of London, following three successful venues in the capital.
With a passion for growing the game from the ground up, Social Spots Society is committed to making padel accessible to everyone and will be offering free or low-cost sessions for Derby-based schools and local groups to help inspire the next generation of players.

Tom Rooney, chief executive of Social Sports Society, said: “We’re thrilled to officially open our brand-new location at Derbion – and with the response from locals so far, as more than 1,700 people pre-booked their slots for the coming days before we opened.
“We’re proud that the opening of our new Derbion space will enable us to continue our efforts to help unlock new community spaces across UK urban areas and are confident that it will bring padel to a new audience and help to grow the game across the East Midlands.”
