Train operator introduces accessibility innovations

East Midlands Railway has introduced new innovations which aim to improve accessibility at its stations and on its train services.
The firm has worked with Derby-based charity Headway Derby to create a new card that helps brain injury survivors quickly communicate they require support when travelling with the train company.

The card was created using guidelines from Communication Access UK – an initiative formed by charities and organisations that share a vision to improve the lives of people with communication difficulties.
The free card is the latest addition to a growing series that covers a range of support scenarios. Since their launch, more than 3,000 customers have contacted EMR to request one.
The train operator has also introduced more accessibility maps to help better inform customers of key facilities
The new station maps were created for Chesterfield, Derby, Leicester, Sheffield and London – among others – using feedback from members of EMR’s Accessibility Panel.
They are available via EMR’s website, at stations or from its customer service centre.
