East Midlands Railway has started trialling a new digital rail ticketing system aimed at simplifying fares.

The East Midlands Railway pilot, which launched this week, uses a mobile app with GPS to track journeys.

Passengers travelling between Derby, Leicester and Nottingham check in and out of trips, with the app charging the lowest available fare at the end of the day.

A barcode within the app can be scanned for ticket checks and barrier access.

The trial offers up to 1,000 local customers the chance to experience this simpler, smarter way to travel.

Backed by Department for Transport funding, the initiative is part of a national effort to modernise rail travel and make train journeys easier and more intuitive.
