Silver lining for horticultural students

A group of horticultural students from Derby College Group are celebrating after scooping a prize for their show garden at the prestigious BBC Gardeners’ World Live.
Their Meditation Garden picked up a Silver Merit Award at the event, which was held at Birmingham’s NEC.

Inspired by Buddhist principles and created in partnership with the Birmingham Buddhist Vihara Temple, the garden offers visitors a tranquil space for mindfulness, reflection, and connection with nature.
It was designed by student Sarah Coe and built by the college’s Level 3 Horticulture students at its Broomfield Hall campus.
Paul Brady, teacher of horticulture at Derby College Group, who led the project, said: “This garden is more than just a display, it’s a sanctuary where people can pause, breathe, and reconnect with the world around them.
“Winning silver is a fantastic recognition for the students and a proud moment for everyone involved.”
The award builds on Derby College Group’s growing reputation for horticultural excellence, following last year’s Platinum Garden Award at the same event.
