A celebration event is set to take place in Derby to mark Small Business Saturday, thanks to the support of a number of Marketing Derby Bondholders.

This year, the free event will take place on Saturday 4 December at the University of Derby’s Law School, in Agard Street, from 10am.

And thanks to the backing of Derby City Council, attendees will be entitled to free parking at the nearby Friar Gate Studios and Chapel Street Car Park.

On the day, delegates will be greeted by a variety of stalls and exhibits.

The Union of Students will open its on-site café, especially for the event, which will be sponsored by Nelsons.

The climax of the event will be a celebration in the main lecture theatre, which will feature a number of special guests.

During the two-hour celebration, seven delegates will be picked at random and handed a ‘golden ticket’, with the recipients given the chance to pitch their business in front of the audience.

The driving force behind the event is Small Business Saturday UK Champion Yvonne Gorman.

Yvonne, who is chief executive and founder of Essential Print Services, has been involved in the initiative since 2013.

She said: “In 2020, we were forced to transfer this event online, which attracted thousands of viewers.

“The long, anticipated return of this event face-to-face will guarantee an amazing atmosphere; one that you cannot replicate online and of course, there will be a few surprises along the way.

“The University of Derby and Derby City Council have supported the event several times and the new venue will mean we are closer to the city centre, where many small retail and hospitality businesses are based.

“After the event, I’m hoping that delegates will spend some time and money with those retailers to show the powerful impact of Small Business Saturday.”
