Architects complete transformation of historic private members’ club
Architects Morrison Design has completed the striking refurbishment of a historic private members’ club in London.
The Derby-based hospitality design specialist has completed the transformation of The Sloane Club, in Chelsea.
Architects Peter Newman-Earp and Les Witten led the ambitious project, reimagining the club for a new generation of members while preserving its iconic character.
Peter and Les were set a brief of creating a space that felt fresh and modern but still rooted in the club’s history.
A key focus was the terrace, previously little more than a courtyard with awnings, usable only in good weather.

Peter said: “Our challenge was to create an all-year-round space that felt airy, light, and inviting.
“Expanding the food and beverage offering was a welcome bonus.”
Les said: “We wanted to maximize the open space and create something timeless, with clean, uncluttered lines.
“The structure dictated a lot of the architecture – it was a challenging space, but the result feels effortless.”
Front-of-house areas were also transformed.

Peter said: “We focused on flow so guests could move intuitively through the club while still discovering intimate pockets with character.”
However, working in an 19th Century building in a conservation area brought technical challenges.
Peter recalls: “It’s a hefty structure. We removed large elements, including a roof light we assumed would be simple – it turned out to be a monolithic piece of concrete.
Les said: “Keeping the club operational throughout construction was tricky.
“Even moving oversized bedheads upstairs demanded teamwork and creative problem-solving.”

The refurbishment also added a wellness suite with a gym and treatment rooms, alongside accessible lifts and flexible bedroom layouts.
Reflecting on the project, Peter said: “The whole club feels more atmospheric and theatrical. Everything has fallen into place beautifully.”
