Derby City Council is setting out the next phase of plans for the Market Hall to maximise its potential as a key destination in the city centre and a cornerstone of wider regeneration.

Since reopening in May last year following a £35 million transformation, the Grade II listed building has re‑established itself as a prominent venue in the heart of Derby.

Around 80,000 people visited during opening week, with ongoing weekly footfall typically between 13,000 and 16,000.

The venue offers a mix of food and drink, fresh produce, retail and services, alongside a programme of events including a popular monthly Farmers’ Market and themed activities that help drive additional footfall.

Following an internal review of the first year of operation, the city council has identified opportunities to refine the operating model, rebalance the weekday and weekend offer, strengthen trader recruitment and support, and improve financial processes to ensure a more resilient commercial position.

To build on early progress and ensure the Market Hall reaches its full potential, the council is proposing to explore working with a specialist commercial partner who could bring additional skills in trader mix and recruitment, marketing, customer experience and performance.

Under any future arrangement, the council would retain ownership of the building and strategic control.

Cabinet members will be updated on the findings of the review and the proposed next steps, including the option to engage a commercial partner, at a meeting today.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, leader of Derby City Council and cabinet member for regeneration, strategy and policy, said: “Derby Market Hall is a key part of our vision for a vibrant, modern city centre that works for everyone and we’re committed to making it the best that it can be.

“In its first year, the Market Hall has established itself as destination, supporting independent traders and bringing new life and activity to this historic building.

“Our focus now is firmly on the future, and we will continue to work with our traders and partners to ensure the Market Hall delivers on its full potential – for traders, customers and the wider city centre.”
