Rail innovation and training centre launches

A new rail innovation and training centre in Derbyshire built by Stepnell has been officially launched.

Derbyshire’s new rail innovation and training centre has now officially opened its doors after construction completed earlier this year.

The Derbyshire Rail Industry Innovation Vehicle (DRIIVe), in Barrow Hill, has opened its doors after construction completed earlier this year.

The facility offers modern classrooms and training areas, specialist research and development facilities including a digital laboratory and commercial workshop space.

Tom Sewell, director at Stepnell, which was the main contractor on the project, said: “It’s fantastic to celebrate the completion of DRIIVe as it opens its doors to businesses, researchers and learners.

“DRIIVe is a first-class centre that will be a catalyst for innovation and growth in the rail industry, and we’re delighted to have played our part in bringing this specialist facility to life.”

The building was officially opened by Ivan Fomin, the independent business chair of Staveley Town Deal Board, which managed the town deal funding programme that funded the majority of the £6 million development.

Additional funding for the project has been provided by East Midlands Combined County Authority and Chesterfield Borough Council.
