Cricket coach racks up a great total from marathon challenge
A member of the coaching staff at Derbyshire County Cricket Club has completed a unique marathon challenge in aid of Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity.
James Fitzgerald, the club’s strength and conditioning coach recently ran the full marathon distance at the Central Co-op County Ground while wearing full cricket kit – including pads, helmet and gloves – while carrying a bat.
The challenge saw James complete 88 laps of the pitch in a time of four hours and 45 minutes.
It came hot on the heels of him completing the London Marathon.

The event at the cricket club saw James joined by players, coaches and staff, along with the Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity team, for sections of the run.
They also cheered him on throughout the challenge – with their encouragement helping to carry James over the finish line.
He was inspired to support the charity following the care his grandparents received from the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA) staff, the equivalent of the NHS where James is from, particularly during his grandad’s time in hospital while living with Alzheimer’s.
The experience gave James a deep appreciation for the dedication of healthcare professionals and the importance of supporting local hospitals and patients.
So far, James has raised £1,595 and is keen to continue taking on further challenges to support the charity.
