A private fundraising group backed by several Marketing Derby Bondholders has reached a significant milestone, distributing £100,000 to individuals and families facing hardship.

Friends of Derby 500 Club was founded on a simple idea: if 500 people each contribute £1 per week, the group can provide £500 every seven days to someone in need.

What makes the initiative distinctive is its commitment that every penny donated goes directly to those in crisis, allowing support to reach people quickly and without administrative costs.

Since launching in 2021, the group has supported more than 200 individuals and families, providing practical help at critical moments, from those recovering from homelessness or addiction, to working families facing financial pressure.

Organisers say the initiative is increasingly helping to bridge gaps where statutory support systems fall short.

Recent trends identified by the group include people moving onto Universal Credit and being left without income for several weeks, individuals moving into empty accommodation with no basic furnishings, and families with no access to public funds.

In many cases, the weekly donation provides a vital stopgap, preventing debt, hardship, or further crisis.

The group also enables professionals such as social workers, housing officers and community support staff, who often have no direct budget to help, to nominate individuals in urgent need of support.

Nominations are made by members and reviewed by a small panel of volunteers, ensuring funds are distributed responsibly while maintaining dignity and privacy for recipients.

Beyond financial contributions, many members also choose to offer additional support, from donating furniture and household items to helping create meaningful experiences for those in need, further extending the impact of the initiative.

Rachel Morris, founder of Friends of Derby 500 Club and chief executive of sexual abuse charity SV2, said: “I am absolutely delighted we have been able to support so many local people in crisis.

“The funding model is effective and sustainable; our £500 donations have been life changing for many recipients.”
