New gallery celebrating craftmanship and art set to launch
The owners of the historic Hopton Hall Estate have announced the launch of a new gallery, which aims to connect centuries of craftsmanship with the artists shaping today’s landscape.
The new Hopton Hall Gallery, in St John Street, Ashbourne, is set to open its doors on Tuesday 14 April, with an inaugural exhibition ‘Brushed Light: Atmospheric Watercolours’, featuring artwork from local artists Roger Allen, Martin Sloman, Sue Quinby, Cheryl Wilbraham, Mark Langley, Sarah Sutton, Tim Rose, Carol Hill and Sarah EA Parker.
The gallery, created inside an 18th century building, is the brainchild of husband and wife Chris and Andi Harvey, owners and custodians of the Hopton Hall Estate, which is situated between Wirksworth and Ashbourne.

Chris said: “We love how art is revitalising the Hopton Hall Estate.
“This July marks four years of our Month of Art, timed perfectly with the opening of our popular walled rose garden.
“It’s all about bringing the community together through creativity and heritage.
“Our gallery is a natural extension of that – a relaxed, welcoming spot to enjoy incredible local artists and experience a piece of history in a whole new way.”
Ruth Matthews, who has been instrumental in the development of Hopton Hall’s annual Month of Art, has been appointed as gallery director.
She brings over two decades of professional experience and, as well as responsibility for shaping the gallery’s curatorial vision and strategic direction, her role involves artist representation, exhibition programming, and the delivery of engaging events and private views.
Hopton Hall, which is Grade II listed, was bought as a family home by Chris and Andi with two goals in mind: to restore the 16th century manor house and its grounds; and welcome visitors to its seasonal events, as well as its cottage guests.
The couple are committed to bringing historical buildings and pubs back to life, making sure that high streets remain diverse and that pubs are not lost forever.
They have so far renovated over 40 historic buildings and pubs, working together with hospitality and retail tenants in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.
The new Hopton Hall Gallery will be open for exhibitions from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm from 14 April onwards.
