Derby City Council has welcomed a popular local family grocer and deli to Derby Market Hall.

Established fruit and veg retailer Martins is the latest new addition to the revamped building, which reopened in May.

Owners David and Caroline Martin are making the short move from their current premises across the road to return to the business’s market trading roots.

The family business is taking two units inside the Market Hall.

First, it will transform the former butcher’s counter into The Market Deli, which will provide a selection of freshly made items including cobs, sandwiches, salads and hot food like jacket potatoes.

The counter will also stock deli meats, cheeses, Scotch eggs, sausage rolls, quiche, jams, preserves and more.

Shortly after this, it will open Martins Fruits stall alongside the deli, offering a wide choice of fresh fruit and vegetables, plus eggs, nuts and dried fruit.

Founded in 1989 by James Martin – David and Caroline’s father – the business was a fixture in the Eagle Market until it was cleared for refurbishment in 2023.

James built the company until his retirement, and it has remained a true family affair, with David’s daughter, Jaime, now representing the third generation involved.

While trading in the market, Martins also operated shops in Alvaston and Normanton.

Following the closure of the Eagle Market, the business moved into its current premises in Albert Street, which will close on Saturday 6 December.

David said: “Our current unit is really successful, but market trading is our passion and we have missed the buzz of being based in a market.

“We’re excited to move into Derby Market Hall and start the next chapter in the Martins story.”

Martins joins several businesses that have recently moved into the Market Hall, with more set to follow in the coming weeks.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, leader of Derby City Council and cabinet member for city centre, regeneration, strategy and policy, said: “We know the public are keen to see traditional market staples at Derby Market Hall, and we’ve listened.

“We are delighted to welcome Martins Fruits – this well-established, local family business will provide high-quality, sustainable fresh produce and delicious lunch options, enhancing the Market Hall’s diverse and vibrant line-up.

“We’ve recently welcomed a number of new traders and will be announcing more soon.”
