Workforce Development as the Foundation
Derby businesses are fundamentally transforming the city’s future by investing heavily in workforce development and skills enhancement. Companies like Qualitrain Group and its divisions (QPE, QEA, and QEC) are at the forefront of this transformation, providing comprehensive training and support to businesses across Derby and Derbyshire to upskill their workforce whilst embedding quality and improvement tools into their operations.
The Apprenticeship Revolution
Derby has become a regional hub for apprenticeship excellence, with major employers like Rolls-Royce and Toyota operating their state-of-the-art Apprentice Academies in Derbyshire, training hundreds of apprentices annually which creates a ripple effect throughout the local supply chain, with many graduates joining both companies and other local businesses. The focus on manufacturing, engineering, construction, and health sectors aligns perfectly with Derby’s industrial heritage whilst preparing for future growth.
Operational Excellence Culture
What’s particularly exciting is the cultural shift we’re witnessing. Businesses are increasingly embracing Lean Six Sigma methodologies, continuous improvement practices, and quality management systems. Through providers like Qualitrain, local companies are achieving remarkable results – with apprentices studying improvement programmes at Level 4 and above saving an average of £142,000 per project. This isn’t just about individual company success; it’s about creating a culture of excellence that raises standards across the entire region.
Skills-Led Economic Growth
The recent £3.288 million government funding secured through the East Midlands Combined County Authority demonstrates how Derby is positioning itself as a skills and training powerhouse. With over 200 new jobs expected from new developments and a 97% first-time pass rate for key qualifications, Derby businesses are proving that investment in people delivers tangible economic returns.
Future Outlook
Derby’s businesses are shaping a future where productivity, efficiency, and quality are the cornerstones of economic growth. The city is evolving from its traditional manufacturing base into a modern, skills-focused economy where companies like Qualitrain are helping businesses achieve operational excellence whilst developing the next generation of skilled professionals.
This transformation positions Derby not just as a place where businesses operate, but as a centre of excellence where companies come to develop their people and improve their operations – creating sustainable, long-term growth for the entire region.
