Opportunities in China

Are you interested in selling your products or services to China or looking for a way to assess the market? Bondholders Derby City Council and East Midlands Chamber are taking a mission to the World Manufacturing Convention in Derby's twin city, Hefei, China (20-23 September).

Run in partnership with Derbyshire County Council, the Midlands Engine and the Department for International Trade, the mission offers an ideal platform to explore opportunities in China or just assess the market.

This is a significant national level event in China and the UK’s position as the “Country of Honour” will be leveraged to maximise business matching.

Marketing Derby will be hosting its first Chinese Embassy event in Hefei during the visit.

The theme of the convention is “Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Creativity Embracing the New Era of Manufacturing”, and it covers not only manufacturing and engineering, but also the support services needed for a business to thrive (industrial, environmental, financial, technical etc).

It will offer:
- Free entry to The World Manufacturing Convention;
- Personalised and pre-arranged business matching with companies in Anhui and at the Convention;
- Before the mission, an introduction programme on the business environment and on operating in China delivered by the China–Britain Business Council (CBBC);
- Grants for qualifying SMEs of up to £940;
- Specific UK business events to showcase our skills, talents and offering.

Derby City and Derbyshire County Councils have a long and close relationship with the province of Anhui and the city of Hefei, with a project director based there. These close relationships will be of real benefit to Derbyshire businesses in preparing for the convention.

Gardeners World silver success

A show garden created by students at Bondholder DCG’s Broomfield Hall and Ilkeston colleges won a silver merit medal at the BBC Gardeners World Live show.

‘The Revelation Garden’ has been most ambitious planned by the Horticulture department and, measuring 25m by 15m, is the largest garden at BBC Gardeners World Live which attracted thousands of visitors across four days (June 13 to 16).

The centre piece for the garden is four life size wooden horse sculptures which have been hand-carved by an artist in Asia, with four gardens depicting the emotions of reflection, peace, love and joy.

The College teamed up with the Derby branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and a range of sponsors headed by Don Amott Parks who will now re-build key features of the garden at their flagship Lakeside Park near Louth for holiday makers to enjoy after the show.

This year’s medal has continued the Broomfield Hall team’s winning streak. Last year the students won the top Platinum medal for their border ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ as well as the prize for the best interpretation of the theme in the 23-strong category. The two previous years resulted in Silver and then Gold medals.

Derby College Horticulture lecturer Mike Baldwin said: “We are obviously delighted to have won such a prestigious medal again for our most ambitious garden yet."

Tioga's life-saving work

A lifesaving device backed by Bondholder Tioga has been recognised as Runner-Up in the 2019 National Medilink Business Awards for UK Start-Up companies.

Developed by SurePulse Medical Ltd, the heart rate monitor will improve the life chances of babies who require medical support in the precious first few minutes of their lives. About one in 10 babies need resuscitation or stabilisation at birth for a variety of reasons including premature birth, trauma or blocked airways.

The SurePulse VS uses an optical sensor integrated into a Cap which wirelessly transmits heart rate information to the Display Unit. This helps clinicians in their management of the baby in the ‘golden minutes’ that they have to stabilise the baby. In the most critical cases it will mean babies’ lives will be saved or life-long disabilities avoided.

SurePulse Medical Ltd is backed by Tioga Ltd and recently shared a stand at the UK 2019 MedTech Conference at the NEC.

Angela Williams, Sales Director of Tioga Ltd said “SurePulse has been an incredibly exciting project from the start and it’s fantastic to see a great idea go from the research bench to full production – all within the East Midlands. Congratulations to the whole team.”
