Supporting the club

Two Marketing Derby Bondholders have formed a winning partnership to nurture the best talent in the county.

The Derbyshire Institute of Sport (DIS) supporters club is now sponsored by recruitment companies Sky Recruitment Solutions and Capella Professional, both run by entrepreneur David Torrington.

All new clients who use either of David’s companies to recruit staff will have a 12-month membership of the DIS supporters club paid for by him. The usual cost is £500.

Chloe Maudsley, head of operations at DIS, explained: “The supporters club is an important funding stream that allows us to inspire and support athletes from Derbyshire to become world-class.

“We are delighted to be working with David because his companies share our values. We both identify people with potential and nurture them to step into the roles that they were born to play."

Membership of the supporters club entitles businesses and individuals to a range of benefits including promotion online and on social media, a monthly e-newsletter and an invitation to meet and network with other supporters, sponsors and some of the DIS coaches and athletes at monthly social evenings, starting in September.

David said: “I first became aware of DIS through my daughter, who swims with a local club. My companies are proud to be Derbyshire-based and we aspire to perform at the highest level and showcase all that’s great about our county – everything that DIS is about. It seemed like a natural fit and we’re delighted to be helping raise awareness of how local businesses can help talented young athletes secure a place on the winner’s podium.”

City on the Up

Derby has been featured in Natwest’s national “Exciting Cities” series, with input from several
Bondholders.

The series looks at cities across the UK that are in high growth with a thriving business community. With a focus on a strong business culture for start-ups, the research has praised the work of Bondholder University of Derby for their incubation spaces, with a particular focus on Banks Mill.

The health of the economy is mentioned with the recent research conducted by Irwin Mitchell a key point, noting that Derby is the fastest-growing city economy in the region, with GVA increasing by 15.1%, and job creation by 1.1%.

David Torrington, Managing Director of Bondholder Sky Recruitment Solutions, is quoted as saying: “The transport links are good and that matters. I like that Derby has a certain intimacy because of its size. The relationships you can form in the city are strong and lasting and not just purely commercial.”

Maria Hanson MBE, founder of Mee & Dee said the business community mentioned low rents and supportive businesses such as Bondholders Franklands Insurance and Sellick Partnership.

She said, “We’re also a member of Marketing Derby, which is a thriving hub, and are plugged into [Bondholder] Connect Derby too, which provides connectivity and facilities for small business and not-for- profits like us.”

Expansion for Sky Recruitment

Bondholder Sky Recruitment Solutions has appointed Natalie Parkinson as the company's first Business Manager.

The appointment comes hot on the heels of Sky's recent expansion; within the last six months the number of staff has risen to 15, including new interns and administrators.

Bondholders Join Forces to Help Young People

Bondholders Derby College and Sky Recruitment Solutions have joined forces to provide additional support for young people looking for their first step into the jobs market.

Current College learners will have more opportunities for part time and seasonal work to support them during their study programmes. Learners will then have access to specialist support from Sky Recruitment Solutions team and the College, when looking for job and apprenticeship roles after graduating.

David Torrington, Managing Director of Sky Recruitment Solutions, said: “I was struck by a presentation at a Marketing Derby Event that highlighted the high quality further and higher education available in the city but that there were challenges in retaining skills in the local area.

“As a business committed to working in partnership to support the local economy, I therefore approached Derby College to explore opportunities for us to work together to tackle this issue.

“This partnership is effectively a mutual referral approach.  We often work with employers to support their recruitment needs but would also like to assist in handling their apprenticeship requirements."

April Hayhurst, Derby College Deputy Principal, Employer and Economic Affairs, added: “This partnership provides a single point of entry both for our current learners, local young people looking for jobs and apprenticeships and for employers who are looking for a range of skills and experience.

“We were keen to work with Sky Recruitment Solutions as they are a company who share our values of providing employers with the skills they need to grow, supporting young people into the world of work and matching the right people with the right jobs.

“This is therefore an exciting new venture with a host of opportunities and benefits both for young people and employers and we look forward to developing the service in the coming months.”

By working together, Sky Recruitment Solutions and the College can share resources and expertise to provide young people with a wider range of job opportunities. We will also develop a joined up and easy to access service to employers.
