Sibbalds

Top class project

Bondholder Derby Grammar School’s Tanzania 2019 expedition this summer has brought the number of new classrooms funded by the project since 2013 to five.

Almost £10,000 was raised for the 2019 project by the thirteen students who took part in the trip as well as general fundraising activity across the school.

This year’s fundraising was helped considerably by the generosity of Marketing Derby Bondholders including Sibbalds Accountants, Bespoke Inns, Mercia Image, Highfield Drinks, and YMCA Derbyshire.

The Derby Grammar School students also spent time teaching the children of Gedeli B School and visiting Forever Angels Baby Home and Hisani Orphanage, where a lot of the Gedeli B school-children call home.

Varchas Swamy was a student on the project. He said: “If we learnt anything on this trip, it is that teaching is incredibly rewarding and heart touching. Seeing the determination to learn in the childrens' eyes, as well as the joy they get out of reading stories and solving maths problems really warmed our hearts. The love and respect the children gave us easily made all the challenging fundraising worth it.”

Following two weeks of hard work at the school, the team headed off to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

Mrs Sly, Tanzania project lead said: “Our boys get so much out of the trip and it ties in so much with what we do in terms of trying to make them into caring and thoughtful citizens. They come back from Tanzania as very different people; it gives them a completely different perspective.”

90 years of helping Derby businesses

Bondholder Sibbalds, a Chartered Accountancy firm based in Derby, is celebrating its 90th year in business this year, having been formed in 1928 by Mr James Sibbald.

David Bowler, Director at Sibbalds, sets out the firm’s beginnings by saying “Mr Sibbald was joined shortly after by Mr Forsyth and Mr Farnsworth. It’s apparent that originality wasn’t one of their greatest qualities as they went on to name themselves ‘James Sibbald, Forsyth and Farnsworth’. Following a number of changes in the partnership, they eventually became known as just ‘Sibbalds’.”

A lot has changed since the early days with the introduction of computers being the most revolutionary. Before computers, the accounts had to be typed up using a typewriter with all of the working papers being maintained in audit bundles tied with pink ribbon and added up by hand.

And now, there is a new revolution which has already begun known as ‘Cloud Accounting’. Sibbalds intend to be at the forefront of this change and believe that moving a business’ accounting systems to the cloud brings many benefits.

David said “Whilst technology may have changed a lot over the past 90 years, the one thing that has remained constant is our commitment to provide the best service and advice we can to the people and businesses of Derby, Derbyshire and the surrounding area.
“We’ve welcomed many faces over the years – as clients, as strategic partners, and as team members – and without the support of all of these, we would not have achieved the success we have over the past 90 years and we thank you all for everything you have done and continue to do to make us the firm we are today.”
