Bondholders support Leigh Timmis world record attempt

Derby cyclist and adventurer Leigh Timmis has secured sponsorship for his world record cycle ride across Europe from fellow Bondholders Ace Sameday Couriers and Mount Cook Adventure Centre.

Ace Sameday Couriers has stepped forward to support Leigh as the headline sponsor for the challenge.

Leigh said: "It is amazing to have the guys on board as the headline sponsor and I am really looking forward to working with them not just on this project, but into the future.
"The fact that it is a courier firm that has come forward is brilliant as in effect I am going from one place to the other as quickly as possible just like these guys do everyday."

Chris Scothern, business development director for Ace Sameday Couriers, said: "We are really excited to be part of Leigh's challenge, it is going to be really interesting following his progress as he makes his way across Europe.

"We think it is an incredible challenge to take on and we want to support him in any way we can as he is doing it for Derby and Derbyshire.

"The cause he has chosen is something that is very important as well, there needs to be more awareness about mental health and the impact it has on people and we want to get behind it as much as we can."

Leigh, from Oakwood, will set off from the coast of Portugal and aims to cycle 4,000 miles – twice the distance of the Tour de France – in less than 20 days, smashing the current record by at least nine days when he arrives in the Russian city of Ufa.  During the journey he will cross nine countries, the Pyrenees, the foothills of the Alps and the Russian Steppe.

Bondholder Mount Cook Adventure Centre, a Derbyshire-based not-for-profit dedicated to providing access to the outdoors for all, will also be sponsoring Leigh in his attempt to break the Guinness World Record.

Mount Cook’s joint founder and director, Colin Adams, said: “Here at Mount Cook, we share Leigh’s passion and dedication to push the boundaries of human achievement. That is why we have decided to sponsor him in his attempt to break this ultra-endurance cycling record. We hope that Leigh’s record attempt will inspire and excite the young people who visit Mount Cook, and will prove that with enough determination and motivation, anything is possible.”

Leigh said: "I'm delighted to be partnering with Mount Cook and I look forward to a strong record attempt with their support. Mount Cook's aim of providing opportunities to outdoor activities for young people is inspirational and I hope that this World Record will encourage more young people to challenge themselves and to lead physically and mentally healthier lives."

Leigh is also raising funds for the mental health charity MQ, as the roots for his remarkable cycling feats – including spending seven years cycling around the world – lie in the depression he suffered as a younger man.

Leigh has also been supported by Derby businesses Bondholders HUUB and Archer Hampson, Prima Velo, Accrofab and Bondholder The University of Derby Human Performance Unit.

Derby cyclist riding for world record glory

Derby cyclist and adventurer Leigh Timmis is taking on his greatest challenge to date – breaking the Guinness World Record for the fastest cycle across Europe.

Leigh, from Oakwood, sets off from the coast of Portugal and is aiming to cycle 4000 miles –
twice the distance of the Tour de France – in less than 20 days, smashing the current record
by at least nine days when he arrives in the Russian city of Ufa.

During the journey he crosses nine countries, the Pyrenees, the foothills of the Alps and the Russian Steppe.

The record currently stands at 29 days, 18 hours and 25 minutes, but fully supported by a team of sports science experts, he believes he can break the 20 day barrier.

He is also raising funds for the mental health charity MQ, as the roots for his remarkable cycling feats – including spending seven years cycling around the world – lie in the depression he suffered as a younger man.

Leigh, who filled the "Dare to Dream" slot at this year’s Marketing Derby Annual Business Event, said: “Attempting this record not only presents an opportunity for me to push the limits of human endurance but to raise awareness of mental health issues that are so close to my heart.

“It was depression and seeking something else in life that led to me cycling around the world, which in turn led me to this moment.

“Since I returned to Derby last year the support I’ve had from people has been phenomenal, and I hope that people will keep on getting behind me and make this not just a record for
myself, but for the whole city of Derby.”

Leigh is aiming for the help of sponsors and the support of the public to help pay for his equipment and support team. Derby businesses HUUB, Prima Velo, Archer Hampson, Accrofab and The University of Derby Human Performance Unit have already got involved to
help, but Leigh is hoping for further help to reach his target.

Round the world cyclist, Leigh engrossed the audience with stories of his round the world trip, and peaked their interest in his next challenge - a Guinness World Record attempt.

Leigh is aiming to break the record for the fastest cycle across Europe. He is working with a team at Bondholder the University of Derby to develop a thorough training and testing schedule.

In celebration of the city’s 2017 achievements, I’m honoured that my accomplishment was chosen to represent what happens when you "Dare to Dream".

Round the World Cyclist Sets Sights on World Record

Bondholder Leigh Timmis, a key note speaker at tomorrow's Marketing Derby Annual Business Event, is raising the bar for 2018, taking everything he learnt from cycling around the world and applying it to breaking significantly a Guinness World Record.

The record for The Fastest Cycle Across Europe covers a distance of 4000 miles (6500km) - twice the distance of the Tour de France - starting from the coast of Portugal and finishing in the Russian city of Ufa, traversing 7 countries, the Pyrenees, the foothills of the Alps and the Russian Steppe. The record currently stands at 29 days, 18 hours and 25 minutes. Fully supported by a team of professionals, his estimation is that he can push a huge leap in performance, breaking the 20 day barrier.

Leigh has been working in partnership with Bondholder the University of Derby's Human Performance Unit, to develop a thorough training and testing schedule. The programme is based on an optimal training plan to improve performance, obtained by exercising at the appropriate levels, determined by testing and pinpointing specific intensity zones. This base data is used to prescribe training volumes and intensities, that will be used to deliver physical adaptation by experts in physiology, psychology and nutrition. This team will join Leigh on the road, complimented by specialists in mechanics and logistics, to ensure the finish line is reached as quickly and safely as possible with all risks mitigated.

Speaking about his motivation, Leigh states “Attempting this record not only presents an opportunity for me to push the limits of human endurance but to raise awareness of mental health issues close to my heart. Through the world record attempt, I will be raising awareness and much needed funds for Mind, the mental health charity, in the hope that others won’t find themselves suffering with depression alone, as I did as a young man.

“For me, this is going to be a fascinating journey into the development of a game-changing project, understanding new depths of physical and psychological advancement, and I’ll be documenting it every step of the way!”

This Guinness World Record attempt opens major sponsorship opportunities, therefore, the team are looking for a small number of key partners who share a passion to push the boundaries of human achievement. In return it will be ensured that these partners are promoted throughout the duration of the project including the preparation and build up, during and after the attempt. Their partnering PR agency already has strategies and tactics in place to guarantee the best possible publicity for the Guinness World Record attempt.
