JSA acquires Eaton Design

Bondholder Justin Smith Architects have acquired Derby based practice Eaton Design Architects. The acquisition also sees EDA owner and Chartered Architect Stephen Eaton join JSA as a lead project architect.

Expanding practice Justin Smith Architects saw a great deal of synergy with Eaton Design, particularly in the hospitality sector. JSA’s work in the sector has delivered the White Hart at Moorwood, The Horse and Jockey at Wessington and The Hurt Arms at Ambergate. Eaton Design complements this with the Horseshoes at Long Lane, The Cock Inn at Mugginton and The Bluebell at Kirk Langley.

Justin Smith commented “Eaton Design Architects are an excellent fit for JSA with their complementary portfolio of work, whilst Stephen brings with him a wealth of experience whose work resonates with our creativity and passion for sustainability”.

Eaton Design Architects’ clients can expect to continue to receive the professional and personal service that they have become accustomed to through Stephen Eaton at Justin Smith Architects.

Codemakers Starts 2018 With Record Order Book

Bondholder Codemakers have started the new year with a record order book, having secured a number of major contracts.

Based at Friar Gate Studios, Codemakers provides web and mobile application development services, focusing on highly scalable apps and sites accessed by thousands of users.

The company has recently secured a mobile app development project with a large medical supplies manufacturer to help practitioners more easily determine the right products for patients. They have also secured a project with Bondholder Justin Smith Architects to develop a new web-based cloud application to manage client requirements more efficiently.

Speaking of the significant uplift in project wins, Codemakers Managing Director Antony Stevenson said, “It’s fantastic to start the year marking our decade in business with a record order book. It proves our consistent aim of delivering high-performance solutions is being recognised and we have become one of the “go-to” suppliers in the city.”

Explaining the likely reasons behind the surge in orders, Antony added: “Recently we have noticed a trend towards replacing legacy apps as mobile devices and web browsers continue to evolve and user expectations rise. Another key motivation is to update apps to ensure compliance with the new GDPR legislation before it comes into effect this May. In both cases we are helping our clients by using the latest technologies to deliver a combination of user experience satisfaction and security.”

The Codemakers client list includes national brands Wowcher, Saniflo and the RAF Museum, as well as serving many local businesses and organisations.

Justin Smith Opens New Premises

Derby County and former England goalkeeper Scott Carson joined clients and local businesses at a special event to mark Bondholder Justin Smith Architects’ 15th anniversary and the official opening of its new premises in the heart of Cathedral Quarter.

The new premises, which are close to Derby Cathedral, have been the subject of a major refurbishment. Set over four floors, they now feature a retail reception, design studios, consultation spaces, meeting rooms and staff break out spaces.

The decision to give the business a high street presence comes during a period of significant growth and will signal the launch of a new venture, the Design Advice Centre.

Commenting on the firm’s 15th anniversary and the launch of its new premises, Justin said:

“When I started my business from home 15 years ago, I had a strong vision of the sort of architectural practice I wanted to create and the recent move to our purpose designed studios fits that original vision.

I’d like to thank everyone who has been part of our story – especially our clients, business connections and of course the team at Justin Smith Architects. It’s great to see so many of those people here tonight to share this special occasion with.

“Thanks also to Derby County Football Club and Scott Carson for carrying out the official opening.

“We hope that our new high street presence will make architectural advice accessible to everyone.”

Justin Smith Architects Moves to New Premises

After more than a decade at Connect Derby's Friar Gate Studios, the building’s first ever tenant has said his final farewells as he moves to his own purpose-designed premises on Queen Street.

Justin Smith Architects moved into the managed workspace scheme for the creative industries on Ford Street in March 2007 and was the first business to take space at the building following its completion by Bondholder Derby City Council.

In the intervening decade, both Justin’s business and Friar Gate Studios have gone from strength to strength. Justin has expanded within the building several times and now employs a team of 10 skilled professionals, who carry out a broad range of work - from small refurbishments to large office buildings and residential properties.

Justin has now relocated to new 4,000 ft2 premises on Queen Street in the heart of the Cathedral Quarter. The building has been the subject of a redevelopment programme over the past six months. Set over four floors, it now features a retail reception, design studios, consultation spaces, meeting rooms, a café, and a gym.

The relocation comes at a time of significant growth for the business, which is also set to operate a new venture, the Design Advice Centre, from its new premises.

Speaking of the move and the help and support he has received from Ann Bhatti and her team over the past 10 years, Justin said:

“After spending five years working from home I decided the time was right to get offices that would allow me to expand the business. This proved difficult as most of the premises on the market at the time had long tie-ins, or weren’t big enough to accommodate the type of work we do.

“Then Friar Gate Studios opened and was perfect for me. On my first day, there was just Ann Bhatti and me in the building - since then I’ve seen Friar Gate Studios expand and the launch of Connect Derby, which has attracted some of Derby’s most exciting businesses.

“The help and support that the Connect Derby team, particularly Ann, have given me over the last 10 years has been invaluable and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. It will be sad to leave, but I know this is an important step in the development of Justin Smith Architects.”

Ann Bhatti, Connect Derby business manager, is sad to see the business move on, but is delighted to see Justin move to the next level:

“It is with a mixture of a heavy heart and immense pride that we are saying goodbye to Justin and his team as they see leave for pastures new.

“They’ve been fantastic tenants over the past 10 years and are a great example of what a company can achieve with the right infrastructure and the range of business support and mentoring that is available through Connect Derby."
