A special award was presented to John Kirkland, chairman of Bondholder Bowmer & Kirkland, in Heage in recognition of his involvement of the College including the construction of major campuses such as the Roundhouse and for donating an annual bursary to young Construction students and apprentices.

Employer of the Year was presented to Bondholder FlowerWorld which is part of Morrisons and has an expanding floristry manufacturing plant in Derby.  The company has worked with Derby College to develop an innovative apprenticeship programme for current staff and new recruits and is committed to offering 20 apprenticeships every year for the foreseeable future.

One of the main prizes went to Apprentice of the Year Amber Nicholson (22) from Chaddesden who is an Engineering apprentice with AESSEAL in Derby - part of a global company specialising in mechanical seals and support systems.

Derby College Chief Executive Mandie Stravino said: “The Peak Awards is the highlight of the College year and a wonderful opportunity to express our thanks to the local and regional business community.

“We are fortunate to have the support of more than three thousand employers who dedicate time, resource and passion to the advancement of our students.

“Many have been involved in the co-creation and co-delivery of our curriculum. This not only ensures that our students have the skills that are relevant to the changing needs of business and will be the talent pipeline for the local and regional economy.

“By providing enrichment and work placement opportunities, these employers are embedding the positive attitudes and attributes amongst our student body to help them make a positive contribution to the workplace from day one.”
