Bondholders Smith Partnership and Oliver's are teaming up to host the law firm's First Tuesday business networking event, on Tuesday 4th April 2017.

Smith Partnership’s successful lunch time initiative for Derby’s professional services community has been running for over 12 years.

Students Support Ramathon

Students from Bondholder Derby College will be turning out in force to support the Ramathon, organised by fellow Bondholder RunDerby

Around 100 students will be supporting the annual Derby half marathon, business team run and mini Ramathon fun run which will be held in June.

Derby College Assessor Ed Watkins explained: “We have been involved in this and many other annual events for several years and it is part of an ongoing programme of work experience for the students.

“Many of our students are planning careers in the public services including the Army and Police and in the security industry so the problem solving skills that they have gained will be invaluable in their future careers.

Ramathon Race Director Richard Kay said: "We have a fantastic relationship with Derby College and are very grateful for their support again this year.

"The students' role on the day is invaluable - ensuring that the runners have safe passage around the route and that the thousands of spectators are able to enjoy the action and cheer on their family and friends."

New Institute for Derby College

This development will link learning provision to the present and future employment and skills needs of employers by offering an expanded range of Construction and Engineering apprenticeship and employer focused programmes.

Bondholder Derby College is further developing its plans to create an Institute of Technology for Engineering and Professional Construction following the announcement of a Government cash boost for the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership area.

A plan has been drawn up to complete a £3m refurbishment of part of the Roundhouse campus.

The Institute will be a hub for higher level skills development, including the creation of 60 higher apprenticeships a year in Engineering and Professional Construction and the development of further level three study programmes for 16 to 19-year-olds who then have the potential to progress onto the higher level programmes with Institute of Technology.

Higher apprenticeship and further education study programmes will range from rail-specific training and Mechatronics in the Engineering sector to civil engineering and construction management in the Professional Construction industry.

Chief Executive Mandie Stravino explained: “There are currently too few people equipped with the higher level technical skills that our economy needs.

“This skills gap is harming the economy – hindering productivity and hampering the life chances of young people.

“The D2N2 LEP has particularly identified the need to recruit a significant number of higher apprentices in the Engineering and Construction sectors to be able to undertake the local infrastructure activity scheduled to take place.

“Employers are asking us to use higher apprenticeship standards to develop these skills and the creation of this Institute of Technology will enable us to meet this demand.

“Our aim is to refit parts of our Roundhouse campus to create a state of the art facility which matches international standards."

New Jobs at Webhelp

Bondholder Webhelp will be creating 50 new jobs, after signing a deal with the Co-op.

Having secured a deal with the Co-op Group Facilities Team, Webhelp will act as its national operations centre. The new service will focus on a combination of voice, webchat and email customer communication.

Glamping Success for Geoff Cox

Bondholder firm Geoff Cox has seen sales increase by a third in a year, selling motorhomes worth £2.5m in the last six months.

This included taking orders for 15 motorhomes at the Caravan and Motorhome Show motorhome at the NEC, Birmingham.

In addition to the orders taken at the show, the company attributes its success to its new outdoor showroom at nearby Denby Pottery Visitor Centre which accommodates 40 new and secondhand motorhomes and caravans.

Now Geoff Cox is hoping to fuel further success with a new product to the market - a 'glamping' (glamorous camping) tent.

This Adria product is a mobile, modular tent that comes in a large box weighing two tonnes and is delivered on a low loader to a mobile home site or even a field.

Sinfonia's Carers' Choir

Bondholder Sinfonia Viva is launching a new initiative to bring together local people who are carers for family and friends.

The new Carers’ Choir will be open to people across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire who will come together once a month to enjoy music and potentially have opportunities for performing.

The choir, which will be free to join, will be launched on Tuesday March 21, 7.30pm to 9.30pm at The Voicebox, Forman Street, when carers and support groups are invited to come along for a taster session, and will be led by award-winning choral conductor David Lawrence.

The Carers’ Choir has been set up as part of Sinfonia Viva’s 35 th anniversary programme - enabling more people than ever to experience creative music making.

As well as a packed concert programme across the region and beyond, Viva is aiming to work directly with 3,500 people over the next 12 months through a series of education and community creative projects.

The project has been made possible for a year with a £13,000 grant from the Bupa UK Foundation’s Caring for Carers Funding programme as part of its focus to help unpaid adult carers to support, manage and improve their own health.

To ensure its future, Viva has launched an anniversary appeal to encourage people to donate £35 to fund its increased education and community work – including the development of the Carers’ Choir.

Sinfonia Viva Education Manager Marianne Barraclough explained: “We have a national reputation for working with communities to develop high quality and award winning engagement projects.

“Our work has included creating music with people in hospitals, hospices, schools, nurseries, special education needs settings, care homes, rural communities and in inner city areas.

“Singing together is proven to be an excellent way of boosting self esteem and confidence, releasing pain and stress-relieving endorphins and being a part of a team that is creating something.

“The Carers Choir is a natural progression for us as an Orchestra and meets the needs of an often hidden section of our local community."

Billing Clarity

Bondholder Data Clarity has released a new software module, which will help recruitment agencies and contractors to get paid.

Clarity365 self-billing is a tool for both agency and contractor with a built-in online approval workflow that reduces the amount of time spent on invoice management and ensures the client has authorised the amount beforehand.

This control measure avoids time-consuming credit notes and improves the relationship between client, agency and contractor.

Birthday Celebration at Denby Village

The Walter Smith Farm Shop at Bondholder Denby Pottery Village is celebrating its first birthday from 10th-12th March 2017 and is inviting their customers to join in the celebrations.

Over the three days there will be a barbeque, sausage making and pie making demonstrations, together with tastings from the farm shop’s most popular suppliers including delicious cheeses, chutneys, jams, wines, beers and much more.  

During this celebration which coincides with British Pie Week (6th-12th March), Walter Smith will be launching their ‘Wyton Wonder Pie’, created at their Huntingdon shop, which boasts a number of celebrity fans.  The Wyton Wonder Pie was awarded Best Hot Pie at the Butchers Q Guild Smithfield Awards 2017 by Food Writer and Critic Tom Parker-Bowles, with Walter Smith also Winning ‘Best English Pork Product’.

University to Develop new Qualification

Bondholder the University of Derby has partnered with Virgin Care to offer foundation degrees to Virgin's health and social care teams across England. 

The Professional Development (Health and Social Care) Foundation Degree will be a work-based course designed for clinical support staff and care assistants aspiring to become assistant practitioners. 

After being accredited by the University of Derby, Virgin Care's training arm will begin delivering the course to its existing health and social care teams this year.

Stuart Rennison-Price, Director of People and Services at Virgin Care, said: "We are delighted to have been able to partner with the University of Derby to deliver this innovative course, and ultimately to improve the care and service we provide for the communities across England."

Business in Combat: Eradicating Modern Slavery in Supply Chains

On Thursday 9 March, at One Friar Gate Square, Bondholder the University of Derby, the International Policing and Justice Institute and the Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA) are hosting a one-day conference to help the business community to understand how they can help to ensure that their supply chains are free from modern slavery and all forms of labour exploitation.

The event has the full support of five East Midlands constabularies — Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire — who work closely with the GLA to bring to justice that those companies and individuals who are knowingly employing workers that are being exploited.

Dr David Walsh, the organiser of the conference, explains why this event is so important: “Many companies in the developed world unwittingly support human trafficking, especially when they employ staff based overseas — many of whom are trafficked or otherwise exploited.

“However, with businesses operating in an increasingly global economy it is very challenging for UK-based companies to ensure that their supply chains are free from bonded or otherwise exploited labour.

"This conference is about taking practical steps that all companies can follow that will help identify modern slavery and help to bring an end to this trade in human misery.”

The conference includes a presentation from Dr Alistair Redfern, the Bishop of Bondholder Derby Cathedral.

YMCA's Sleep Easy

Bondholder YMCA's Derbyshire’s 2017 Sleep Easy event is taking place on Friday 31st March, at fellow Bondholder Derbyshire County Cricket Club's 3aaa County Ground.

All the money raised from YMCA Derbyshire's Sleep Easy event goes towards the Safe Front Door Campaign. This campaign enables YMCA Derbyshire to continue providing safe accommodation, opportunities for young people to engage in positive activities, work experience and volunteer opportunities and gain business mentors.

Many Bondholders have previously taken part in the event, including Toyota Manufacturing UK, Bell and Co and Geldards.

Richard Salt, Managing Director of Bell & Co, said: "The Sleep Easy was anything but! I did it with my friend Simon Storey from the Derbyshire Cricket Club and a team of willing volunteers from Bell & Co. I found it challenging and perhaps life changing.

Jenson Button Returns to Derby

Bondholder HUUB has revealed that the Jenson Button Trust Triathlon will return to Derby for the third consecutive year on Sunday July 23.

This summer’s event will be even bigger with elite, seasoned and novice triathletes as well as teams of three in the Team Challenge, competing alongside Formula 1 McLaren Honda racing driver Jenson Button in a day of sport.

Everyone will get the chance to race twice. The preliminary will consist of a 200m swim in Markeaton Lake; 10km cycle from the park and on closed roads into the city’s Cathedral Quarter before returning to the park to complete a 2.5km run.

In the individual event, the top male and female performers will then go on to the finals – completing a 400m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run, with the runners up entering the wooden spoon race.

The Team Challenge participants will race again in the afternoon over the Super Sprint distance and the team with the fastest average time will emerge victorious.

The prize fund available to competitors is one of the largest for a UK based sprint triathlon. A grand total of £7,000 will be on offer, split between the male and female categories.

Spectators are invited to join in the fun. As well as the opportunity to watch the competitors in action, a wide range of family activities will also be held at the event village set up in Markeaton Park.

The day will culminate in medal presentations by Jenson Button and a post-race party for participants with live music and locally-produced food and drink.

Jenson Button said: “Moving the triathlon to Derby has enabled us to grow the event in terms of entrants and spectators and make it a great day out for the whole family.

“It’s an amazing location in the park and having a closed road cycle route is a particular bonus thanks to the support of Derby City Council.

Back by popular demand, during the JBTT lunchtime break there will be a free to enter family triathlon in the park which is open for children aged between seven and 15, accompanied by an adult. This consists of a 50m swim in the lake then heading out onto the closed roads for a 2.5km cycle before a 750m run – crossing the same finishing line as the JBTT triathletes.

Also in the lunchtime break, this time in the city centre, there will be a children’s criterium hosted by Cycle Derby CC with young people taking part in a series of races around closed roads in the Cathedral Quarter. This event has been extremely popular in the last two years and a big crowd is expected to attend.

£200m Plans for Derby Station

Plans worth £200m to expand Derby's railway station have been submitted to Bondholder Derby City Council.

The plans outline the construction of a new platform on the Pride Park side of Derby Midland Station, resulting in six "through" platforms. 

The construction forms part of a revamp of the Midland Main Line, which runs between Derby and London in the south, and Sheffield in the north. 

The new platform will not only help ease congestion at the station, but will also help increase capacity. 

Network Rail, who submitted the plans, said: "We have recently submitted designs for a new platform at Derby station to Derby City Council for prior approval, as part of our project to remodel the track at Derby Station in 2018.

"This upgrade is a significant piece of work that will bring journey time benefits to passengers travelling to, from, and through Derby."

Derby Midland Station is run by Bondholder East Midlands Trains, recently begun a six-figure investment into improving the station.  To kick off this new investment, the operator has installed new customer information screens. 

Rick Cammack, project manager for East Midlands Trains, said: "These new customer service improvements are all part of East Midlands Trains' commitment to keeping customers informed and as up to date as possible with the latest information.

"The new screens will help customers with simple and easy-to-read next train information. The screens that were installed throughout Derby station have already received positive feedback from staff and customers who have reported how much of an improvement they are."

RFEM Professional Services Showcase

Bondholder Rail Forum East Midlands are hosting a Professional Services Showcase event at Connect Derby's iHub.

The event will be a small exhibition, showcasing the offerings of RFEM's professional service members with experts across the rail, logistics and transport sectors, on hand to offer their advice. 

This event will provide the opportunity for you to:

  •  learn what funding opportunities, grants and loans, might be available for your business (including the rail specific Rail Supply Growth Fund);
  • find out what financial advisory services are available for business owners looking to grow and/or sell their businesses;
  •  understand more about how to manage and protect your intellectual property and register any patents or trademarks;

MX's London Display

Bondholder MX Display was selected by City Hall in London to print and install a huge Photo Floor graphic, as part of a project by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.

The Mayor of London hosted an event for school children to raise awareness of air pollution. As part of the event, MX Display created a 10m by 15m metre map showing pollution levels in London.

The interactive floor graphic really helped the children learn about pollution levels in different areas of the city. 

Kate Findlay, a representative from the City Hall, said: "The event went well and everyone was very impressed with the map – including the Mayor."

TV Stardom for Neo Elegance

New Bondholder Neo Elegance has been selected to appear on a national television show.

From the production team behind global award-winning TV shows Tattoo Fixers and Gogglebox, the skin clinic has been asked to be a part of their new show on weird and innovative beauty treatments.

The show, yet to be named, will be looking at clinics and salons across the UK to ultimately select one which will be crowned ‘salon of the nation’.

Consultation on the Industrial Strategy

The Government has published its Green Paper on Industrial Strategy - central to which will be new sector deals and major investment in research and development to support the economy.

To support this the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership is gathering views from businesses and organisations in its area, so it can better represent those views to Government.

The Government launched a UK-wide consultation on its green paper, the Building our Industrial Strategy report, at the end of last month. The 132 page report outlines ten key pillars – including skills building, upgrading infrastructure and investing in science – through which the Government is seeking to drive economic growth, and reduce regional variations in opportunities and prosperity. The Government’s 12 week consultation on the Strategy will end on Monday April 17.

D2N2 is conducting its own research to gather local businesses' views on the strategy. A short survey can be filled online, by clicking here.

During the consultation period, Marketing Derby and Bondholder East Midlands Chamber are hosting a joint business consultation session, where the strengths, assets and opportunities that exist within businesses will be explored and a Derby-based response to the strategy will be developed.

The session is aimed at all businesses and will be participative and include a Q&A with MP for Derby North, Amanda Solloway, who sits on the BEIS Select Committee.

Startup Weekend

Involving Sean Price from Bondholder RDS Global, and Bev Crighton from Bondholder the University of Derby, Startup Weekend is coming to Derby this March.

Startup Weekend is a 54 hour event that brings together Derby designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and experts from all domains to do amazing things.

Over the weekend ideas are pitched, selected, validated, prototyped and presented, with leading industry experts acting as mentors. On the final day, people will get to present their business to a panel of judges. A winner will then be selected and everyone celebrates to a great weekend.

The weekend event will begin with Derby's leading entrepreneurs sharing their own journeys, to help encourage the next generation.  

Everybody is welcome to pitch their idea, and get feedback from their peers and Derby's leading experts.

The Bondholder League

With the Central Health Derby 10K approaching and 23 businesses already submitting teams, including bondholders BB&J, Tidyco, Derby Telegraph, Innes England, Rolls Royce and Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK, Sporting Futures are urging more bondholders to sign up for the challenge.

The Derby 10K is running for its 17th year on 9th April and Sporting Futures want to get as many Marketing Derby bondholders involved as possible. A new bondholder league is being organised for the first time.

The inaugural league will work based on a points-per-team system. Companies are invited to enter as many teams as they like (minimum 4 and maximum 10 per team), but efforts will be scored per team not by company, meaning the more teams you enter the more chance you have at claiming the title.

Points will be awarded as follows:

•    10 automatic points for team entry

•    1 additional point per team member

•    10 points for each runner finishing sub 45 minutes

•    5 points for each runner finishing between 45-60 minutes

•    3 points for each runner finishing in 60+ minutes.

In addition, teams can scored extra points by signing up volunteers.

 Volunteers can sign up online, citing their company name in ‘How did you hear about us’ for points to be added to the overall team score. Volunteer points will be added after their attendance on race day, and each volunteer will gain 5 points for their team.

Bonus points will also be awarded for the most original and imaginative team photo, uploaded via the team’s preferred social network with the hashtag #BHchallenge.

Winners will be announced the week after the race and the team will receive a free entry for 5 people into a future Sporting Futures event. All bondholders who take part will be acknowledged as charity supporters through Sporting Futures’ website, social media and post-race report.
