Attracting Chinese tourism

The tourism team at Bondholder Derby City Council is working in partnership with Hino Travel, to help increase visitor numbers to Derby and Derbyshire.

This is the result of the relations that the team have been building over several years with Hino Travel, an international Chinese travel agency and the second largest inbound travel agent in the UK.

Between January and August 2018 Hino Travel sent 46 Chinese groups of tourists and students (758 people in total) to Derby and Derbyshire.

Chatsworth House, Mayfield Alpacas and Bluebells Ice Cream Farm were popular attractions in 2018, with Royal Crown Derby and Buxton in the Peak District already appearing on itineraries for Chinese tourist groups in 2019.

Yu Zhang, Deputy General Manager of Hino Travel said “Derby and Derbyshire have so many great attractions for visitors and we look forward to bringing Chinese groups to more great attractions in Derby and Derbyshire in 2019.”

An overnight visitor is worth approximately £165 to the economy of the area and a day visitor is worth £54.

Stella Birks, Visitor Services Development Manager said “We continue to work with tour operators to build awareness of the great products we have to offer to Chinese visitors. This is a great opportunity for Derby and Derbyshire to increase visitor numbers in the short term and also establish a pattern of popular attractions that independent Chinese visitors will want to follow for longer term growth.”
