Ashbourne, the gateway to the Peak District, may be better known as a destination for walkers than a property hotspot.
But the historic market town, with a record-low crime rate and a landscape ready-made for summers of adventure, has been named the best town in the UK to raise a family.
John Forkin, Managing Director at Marketing Derby, said "Quality of life has always been one of the biggest attractions for businesses and people in choosing Derby and Derbyshire as a place to locate.
"The city is very lucky to be surrounded by vibrant market towns such as Belper, Repton and Melbourne.
"To hear that Ashbourne is number one in the country is no surprise."
New research by online estate agent Yopa has combined factors such as educational standards, GP ratings, crime levels, drug and alcohol abuse, quantity of green space and pollution levels to rank the top 10 family-friendly hotspots.
This study also takes in issues such as obesity levels, average salaries, job prospects and road safety, to find the most peaceful and nourishing locations to live with children in.
