The aim of the partnership is to promote and foster trade and multilateral relations between Derby and Kolkata.
Derby has already established a strong link with Hefiei in China in the past couple of years and it is hoped that the link with India will prove as successful.
Councillor Baggy Shanker, Cabinet Member for Finance and Government said: "We are committed to exploring the opportunities a partnership brings, opening doors to joint business ventures and inward investment, creating opportunities in education, culture and tourism ad also creating lasting friendships."
David Pearson, Director of Partnerships and Membership Services, East Midlands Chamber, said: "East Midlands Chamber, in conjunction with Derby City Council, was delighted to sign an agreement with the Indian Chamber of Commerce which paves the way for an increased flow of international trade between our region and Kolkata and the West Bengal region of India."
