A total of 20,000 people could be employed at Bondholder East Midlands Airport and the surrounding area by 2030.
Karen Smart, managing director at East Midlands Airport, has said the airport is set to add a further 1,000 jobs to its 7,000-strong team in the coming months, with the wider area expected to swell to 16,000 in the next three years.
She added: "It's been very interesting since joining the airport as it's very different from Stansted which is a much larger passenger operation while East Midlands is weighted more towards cargo,"
"Passenger numbers here have remained flat this year but cargo saw a 16 per cent rise over the summer and is up 10 per cent year on year.
"We are still focused on growing the passenger side of the airport and my number one priority is to fix the problems we are having in peak periods at immigration.”
