The dawn of a new era at The Derby Conference Centre

It’s a changing of the guard at Bondholder The Derby Conference Centre, with the introduction of a new Managing Director Matt Hutchings. Matt has been in place at the Centre for a number of months, ensuring a smooth transition into his new role.

Matt will be taking over from Mike Ebbitt, who is retiring after 44 years in the industry - including 10 years at The Derby Conference Centre. During his time at The Derby Conference Centre, Mike oversaw a period of growth and success at the Centre, bringing a motivational style of management and introducing the key values which have been behind the Centre’s growth.

Mike has been at the forefront of driving The Derby Conference Centre forward, including transforming the building into a multi-purpose site complete with upgrading bedrooms and facilities, as well as obtaining Grade II listed status and receiving the Red plaque from the Transport Trust.

“It’s been a wonderful time managing The Derby Conference Centre,” Mike says. “I’m sad to be leaving of course but I’m really excited for my retirement and being able to spend more time with my family. The last 10 years have been like seeing a child develop into an adult in many ways – we’ve all come a long way during that time, with plenty of challenges of course, but I cannot express how proud I am of the team and how privileged to have worked with them all.”

“Mike has given so much to The Derby Conference Centre,” Matt adds. “He’s been a great mentor to myself and I’m keen to continue his hard work. It’s been an honour and pleasure learning from him over the last few months – his knowledge is so valuable in everything we do here at the Centre.”

As the new Managing Director, Matt’s main role will be to continue building on the vision Mike had back when he started 10 years ago – to turn The Derby Conference Centre into a hotel, conference and events venue that charms the customer, exceeds expectations and delivers excellence to a UK-wide audience.

Having worked in the hospitality industry since the age of 16, Matt has built his experience through several different roles. He has even opened two hotels himself, as well as refurbishing another, always bringing the same focus on investing in people.

“I have found that you cannot achieve success without investing in people, through development and engagement,” Matt says. “I’m really excited to inspire the fantastic team we have already at The Derby Conference Centre to think differently and engage them to begin a journey together in which we’ll evolve the Centre into the premier venue it can be. That potential is part of the reason why I was inspired to join The Derby Conference Centre.”
