Bondholder Bombardier has been shortlisted for a £2.75bn contract to supply trains for High Speed 2.
The firm is one of five companies that has been invited to tender for the contract.
The contract will cover design, build and maintenance of the trains.
A Bombardier spokesperson said: “We are delighted to have pre-qualified for the contract to supply the new trains for High Speed 2.
"Bombardier has the unique capability to design, develop, build and maintain trains in Britain, so we are very excited by the chance to be part of this transformational project to transport 300,000 passengers a day on Britain’s new high speed rail network and the existing railway.”
All five bidders will now be invited to tender in spring 2018, with contracts awarded in 2019.
Chris Rayner, HS2 Ltd managing director of railway operations, said: “It’s great to see such a strong line-up of experienced high-tech manufacturing and design talent.
“Together with the successful bidder, HS2 will deliver some of the world’s most advanced rolling stock, engineered to provide seamless, accessible, fast and reliable journeys."
