The Very Revd Dr Stephen Hance is installed as the new Dean of Derby at Bondholder Derby Cathedral.
The Dean is the most senior priest at Derby Cathedral, and is the head of Chapter – the governing body of the cathedral. Dean Hance becomes the eleventh Dean since the Church of All Saints, Derby, became a cathedral in 1927.
His appointment follows a period during which The Revd Dr Sue Jones filled the post as Acting Dean following the appointment of The Very Revd Dr John Davies, former Dean of Derby, to the post of Dean of Wells in November 2016.
In his first sermon, Dean Hance discussed the role of Derby Cathedral: “Derby Cathedral is for worship, for the city, and for the whole community. We are proud to work alongside partners in the city, county and Diocese, and will work with anyone who wishes to further the common good. Derby Cathedral exists to bear witness to the love of God, which is why worship and prayer is at the heart of the life of the building.
"We also exist for the city, and for all who live and work here. As a Cathedral, we are excited to share in the artistic and cultural life of Derby. I am thrilled and honoured to serve as Dean of Derby at this exciting time for Derby Cathedral.”
The Rt Rev Dr Alastair Redfern, Bishop of Derby, said: “I am delighted that Stephen has accepted the invitation to be the next Dean of Derby. He brings a wealth of experience and expertise in parish ministry, cathedrals and mission.
"As we welcome Stephen and Jacqui and their family we look forward to an exciting new chapter in the life of our Cathedral and Diocese.”
