Bombardier has signed a deal with Abiello UK to build 1,000 new carriages for East Anglia's rail network.
The deal worth £1billion — the same as London's Crossrail project — will secure 1,000 of Bombardier's 1,600 jobs based at its Litchurch Lane site for the foreseeable future.
Des McKeon, UK Commercial Director at Bombardier Transportation, said: "We look forward to working with our customer the Abiello UK, to support them in transforming rail services throughout the region and delivering an enhanced customer experience through the provision of new trains."
Bombardier will be building 660 of the new carriages in Derby which shall be similar to those currently in production for London's Elizabeth Line. At the same time, Bombardier has formed a joint venture with Hitachi to bid for the next major London Underground contract, due later this year.
