Spot On For Derby

We want to improve people’s experience of Derby which is why we will continue to invest in the public realm. This will create a high quality space at an important pedestrian junction, sharing the Derby story and hosting family entertainment
— Martin Rawson, Deputy Leader

A major new Derby City Council public realm scheme is set to be opened tomorrow. The £1.2 million redevelopment of The Spot in the St Peters Quarter aims to breathe new life into the area and increase footfall between intu Derby and the Cathedral Quarter.

The revamp will help to create a vibrant space for social gathering, street trading, and entertainment centered around striking public art.

The area will feature a ring sculpture and a creative timeline installation, designed by Bondholder Smith of Derby, celebrating important moments in the Derby story.

Deputy Leader of Derby City Council, Martin Rawson, said: "We want to create an environment that people want to spend time in. St Peter's Cross has proved to be a success, so hopefully that will be the case at The Spot."

A majority of funding had been provided by D2N2 to help create a more attractive area.

The new-look Spot will be launched on Friday with a showcase of magic, comedy, street traders and fire dancers. The event will begin at 5pm, and will include a performance piece from Flaming Oz Fire Dancers.
