Civic award for £10.8m sports centre

Bondholder Derby Civic Society has awarded the University of Derby for the construction of its £10.8 million sports centre.

The £10.8m development was up against stiff competition for the Brighter City of Derby award including the iHub at Infinity Park, Markeaton Street Cottages, Full Street hotel and flats, and Castleward phase one.

The impressive sports complex includes:

  • eight badminton courts;
  • sports hall;
  • 70-station fitness suite;
  • dedicated fitness studio;
  • two squash courts;
  • climbing wall;
  • indoor spring track; and strength and conditioning suite.

Hari Punchihewa, Deputy Chief Executive and Finance Director at the University of Derby, said: “I'm thrilled that the Derby Civic Society has selected the sports centre for this prestigious award, recognising that, as a university, we are serious about sport and it is going from strength to strength.”
