China Hosts Investment Mission

A delegation of Derby and Derbyshire businesses, and civic leaders, has travelled to China this week, as part of a wider Midlands Engine trade and investment mission.

The delegation has travelled to China with aims to further civic and economic partnerships with the city of Hefei in the Anhui province, which could potentially boost trade and tourism. They will also explore university to university partnerships, which could bring Chinese students to Derby.

Ranjit Banwait, Leader of Derby City Council, said: “This is a big opportunity for the city, China is a superpower and we've got the opportunity to do business with them. This is our opportunity to be part of the world stage and to sit alongside the greatest cities in the world.”

We are keen to see Derbyshire as being central to Government’s plans to promote the Midlands Engine
— Anne Western, Leader of Derbyshire County Council

Martin Rawson, Deputy-Leader, said: "Both cities have similarities, be that the passion and friendliness of our people as well as the highly successful industries both cities are home to. This partnership will open doors to so many opportunities for business, investment, culture and tourism.

The visit is a very strong statement of intent and the synergies between the Derby and Derbyshire offer. The opportunities in Hefei and Anhui are very clear
— Nick Low, British Embassy Beijing

"It's a fantastic time to be making such connections and will, I hope, lead to new jobs and opportunities for people in Derby."

Derby’s strong public – private partnership team includes representatives from the Bondholder community, including East Midlands Chamber, Smith of Derby, Geldards, University of Derby, and Derby City Council.

The delegation will also be joined by Marketing Derby Managing Director, John Forkin.

John Forkin said: “This is no quick hit, we will come back with contacts, not contracts, however, if we don't make the effort and show commitment, the investment will go elsewhere.”
